Self-care. We’ve all heard that word but never considered the meaning behind it. What is it, anyway? Meditation? Yoga? Sitting in a warm bath with a thousand candles and some light jazz to accompany you? No, self-care is any activity done deliberately to improve our mental, emotional, and physical health. Self-care is entirely up to you. It may not consist of meditation or yoga, or oddly sensual baths. Maybe your idea to wind-down is to jog or read or binge-watch that new series on Netflix. The concept is still the same. And with the help of essential oils, you can boost your nonexistent self-care routine to its true potential!

You can’t pour from an empty cup. An empty lantern provides no light. Insert another dozen analogies here! Self-care is the foundation of your health. If you’re not taking care of yourself: you’re not happy, you’re not healthy, and you’re not a productive member of society. But essential oils can help you adapt a healthy intuition for self-care.

SELF-CARE TIP #1

Your mood is the first step to achieving the best version of yourself. A happy mood makes a happy day. Ylang-ylang, Bergamot, Geranium, and Lavender are like natural antidepressants. They can reduce feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety while increasing your vigor for life! For emotions, I recommend diffusing 3-5 drops of choice oils into a diffuser. Also, apply to the back of your neck, on your forearms, and over your heart—these are quick pathways to your head and heart which may help soothe negative emotions. Balance and Citrus Bliss are also highly effective oils.

SELF-CARE TIP #2

The second step is to make time for yourself. Not for you and your friends or you and your kids—just you, yourself, and the mirror. Seriously, YOU time is the BEST time. Now, there are no oils that magically free your schedule. That’s something you have to do on your own. However, there are oils that may ensure that “YOU time is the BEST time.”

If you frequently indulge in yoga or meditation, Frankincense is a must-have for spiritual connection and balance. Also, as ironic as it is, the Yoga Collection by DoTERRA is a trio of essential oils perfect for such occasions. Align, Anchor, and Arise can ground, attune, refine, center, enhance, and enlighten your experiences. They contain mostly citrus and “woodsy” oils for their uplifting and grounding properties.

Not a meditation fan? Me neither. But warm baths sound nice! No, I don’t obsess with candles and irrelevant intricacies. It’s just you, your choice of comforts, and the cozy water. Did you know that you could infuse your bath with essential oils? Apply a few drops of your favorite oil into a tablespoon of Epsom salt and scatter it upon the surface of the water. Nothing like the aroma of essential oils to accompany that soothing bath!

SELF-CARE TIP #3

The final step of self-care is to stay healthy—inside and out! It starts with a good night sleep. Lavender is great in the diffuser and on the bottoms of your feet at night. DoTERRA also has a blend called Serenity that may prove to be a bit stronger than Lavender. Furthermore, it’s important to keep your immune system strong. Take On Guard daily to ensure that your immune system is performing at its finest. You can put a drop under your tongue or take in capsules 1-2 times per day. TriEase may also prove helpful for seasonal threats.
